SVG vs PNG for cutting machines: which file to use, and when

Every bundle here downloads with more than one file inside, and the most common support question we get is some version of "which one do I open?" The answer depends entirely on what the machine or the printer is about to do with it.

SVG is a set of instructions, PNG is a picture

An SVG does not store pixels. It stores the shapes: this curve starts here, bends this way, closes there. Your machine reads those coordinates and moves a blade along them. Because the file is math rather than a grid of dots, the same file cuts cleanly at two inches or two feet.

A PNG is a fixed grid of pixels. Enlarge it and there is no extra detail to draw with, so the software has to invent it. That is what a soft or stair-stepped edge actually is: a machine guessing where a line was supposed to be.

The practical rule

  • Cutting or engraving (Cricut, Silhouette, Glowforge, a vinyl plotter): use the SVG. It is the only format that gives the blade a real path to follow.
  • Print-on-demand and sublimation: use the PNG, at the largest size provided, with its transparent background intact. Most print services want a raster file and will rasterize an SVG anyway, usually at a size you did not choose.
  • Screen use (a mockup, a listing photo, a social post): PNG is fine, and easier to drop into whatever you are already working in.
  • Editing before you cut (splitting a design, recolouring layers, removing an element): open the SVG in Inkscape, Illustrator, Affinity Designer, or Design Space itself. The layers survive.

Why a PNG sometimes "works" on a cutting machine anyway

Design Space and its equivalents will happily accept a PNG and trace it into a cut path for you. It works, in the sense that something comes out the other end. What you lose is precision: the trace approximates the outline it thinks it sees, so fine serifs get rounded, thin strokes close up, and small counters (the hole in an "a") fill in. On a big, chunky shape you may never notice. On a script quote at four inches wide you will.

A few things that are not the file's fault

If a cut goes wrong, check these before assuming the design is broken:

  • Blade depth and material setting. Nine out of ten ragged cuts are a setting, not a path.
  • Scale. Some detail has a floor. A design with 1mm strokes at its intended size becomes uncuttable at half that.
  • Grouping. If a design moves as one block when you want to recolour a single layer, ungroup it first; the layers are there.
